New Adventures @ Monto Water Rats

Flash Blur (or slow sync flash, if you prefer) is one of those things you either love or hate, but I think if it’s done well and you don’t overuse it, it’s a useful technique to know and can result in some striking shots. I’d love to get your opinion on this photo - is it too busy? Is there too much going on with the light trails? Does it detract from the subject? Is there just enough to make it interesting?

School of Seven Bells are touring to promote their new album, Disconnect From Desire, and I really enjoyed the show. I thought the band had a similar vibe to The Cocteau Twins, and at certain times, Lush.

Set to run over lead singer Bono’s 50th birthday, this exhibition charts the group’s beginning from their first gigs and photo-shoots, up until the filming of Rattle & Hum.

A freelance photographer working on emerging Irish music magazine Hot Press, Colm Henry came across a young and unsigned U2 when they were featured in the publication. Gaining the band’s trust Henry was asked to photograph them on a regular basis, and was afforded a unique insight as they grew from an enthusiastic local band into one of the world’s most recongnised names in music.

Henry says: “We were both learning together really, honing our trades. I was just starting out and so were they. I wasn’t a pushy kind of person, I think they appreciated that. They trusted me to get a good shot.”

Presenting a cross section of unseen work, this specially selected exhibition is set to shine new light on a band that continues to take the world by storm.

Colm Henry
Colm Henry’s photographic career began in the late 1970s. Focusing on the growing Irish music scene, Henry worked extensively with award-winning publication Hot Press and enjoyed over 10 years as principle photographer to Rock band U2.

Today Colm remains based in Ireland and continues to photograph Irish musicians, dancers, and creative forces. His distinctive style has led him to be awarded the “Best of Irish” award in Irish Editorial Photography.

Here’s a picture I took of a bike in Soho. It’s not the bike we’re interested in though, oh no… Look behind it. Check out that wall! How cool is that? What a great colour. And so much of it.

A beautiful, pristine, green wall, right in the centre of London.

I’ve been wandering through Soho recently, looking at this wall, and I thought it would make a fantastic background for a portrait, or a promo shoot for a band. I’d even visualised how all the shots would look in my head, maybe even throwing a ringflash into the mix for some close-up headshots, picking out the colour and getting a nice glow to the green. I saw a random girl in the street with red hair and green eyes, she would’ve looked amazing against that background.

OK, so I’ll definitely have to make some arrangements, and add it to my list of locations, and do a shoot or two there. Yeh, I’ll definitely get around to doing that.

Except… I walked past my lovely green wall today, and it’s covered in posters. WHAT?! How could they? There’s still enough green to work some headshots, but all the rest of my visualisations have gone out the window. FAIL! I wasn’t fast enough.

The point, then, is this - you rarely get any second chances in photography, so make the most of the moment when it arises. When you see that green wall, get the red haired girl and do the photoshoot, because tomorrow it might be covered in posters.

I took this photo during a trip to Glastonbury, when we had a little day out to Wookey Cave in Somerset. So, why is it so popular? Has it been blogged and linked somewhere? Are there just a lot of underground lake, waterfall and cave aficionados out there? If so, Hello underground lake, waterfall and cave aficionados! I’d love for you to tell me why it’s so popular.
